Such individuals frequently live on diet soda and cigarettes as their primary "nutrient" intake. The other side of the coin is the person who is over nourished, even though their body may think it is starving. While consuming caffeine can potentially help such a person, this is frequently not the case. For example, instead of getting improved bowel function, such individuals simply get heartburn or a sore stomach from consuming caffeine, especially when they exceed a small amount. Even in healthy individuals, caffeine can tilt metabolism in a manner that begins to induce insulin resistance.

Although her textbooks may have said that it was all right for her to consume 'moderate' amounts of coffee, diet soda, and chemical-laden processed foods, clearly it was not all right with her body. Her body was falling apart like Mr. Whitless' car. I don't know why she thought she was having so many health problems. Like many people, she probably thought it was due to a genetic weakness or some mysterious forces of nature "that just happen." As stated earlier, the truth is, there isn't any condition in the body that can't be improved by improving your diet.

The recycling contradiction: Why recycling alone fails to protect the environment

You don't end up with aluminum cans around the house or plastic bottles of diet soda. When you buy fresh, raw ingredients, the only thing you are left with are some plastic or paper bags, both of which are easily recycled. The way to save the environment is to make better decisions at the point of purchase. Don't buy lawn products containing chemicals that damage the environment. Don't buy laundry detergent in any form unless it's fragrance-free and eco-friendly. Don't buy skin care products you wouldn't eat, because most things you put on your skin get absorbed into your body anyway.

It is important to understand that while it is often the case that someone is able to ferret out a specific food that is causing certain problems, like Marissa who was able to make a direct link between her depression and diet soda, this is sometimes not the case. Sometimes people's systems are so weakened and backed up from years of poor eating habits that they have to clear their system to a great degree before they can get a clear understanding of what specific foods are causing them problems.
I have personally worked with a number of people who have been relieved of both depression and anxiety by going off diet soda that contains aspartame. None of these are food, they are all synthetic chemicals that have no business in your body. There are volumes of information available on each of these artificial sweeteners. Do your own research and chances are, you will end up with more suspicions than confidance in these substances. Once again when in doubt, do without. There are so many natural sweeteners that we know for sure are safe, why take the chance?

Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back

The House finally passed a compromise bill that allowed diet soda and sports drinks to be sold in high schools after the lunch period. Then the bill had to go back to the Senate, where it had already passed. But this time, lawmakers there attempted to delay the process by adding no fewer than ten unrelated amendments, such as requiring smoke detectors in school bathrooms. Other underhanded tactics included Coca-Cola's lobbyists sharing data regarding school income from soda sales with lawmakers behind closed doors so that advocates could not refute the information.
While the nutrition standards are marginally better, they still allow diet soda, sports drinks, and other unhealthy beverages in high schools. But what didn't change is that the policy is still completely voluntary and lacking any accountability. While industry did this time promise to "compile the percentage of schools in compliance" and make this information publicly available beginning in August 2007, how the companies will determine compliance is a mystery. Moreover, it's up to the schools to renegotiate their contracts. But what if they don't?

In response to the question about his diet soda use, they agreed to try an experiment. He shifted to drinking water and juice for several days. On the third day, he got off the couch and began washing and cleaning his car. Each day he began to feel better, and his mood became more positive. He was tapered off his medication and is now medicine- and diet soda-free and is actively participating in life. He believes, as I do, that he was having a reaction to the aspartame that affected his mood and nervous system. This is not uncommon.
She saw her brother consuming over a six-pack of diet soda daily, including having a can at his bedside in a cooler at all times, which he drank throughout the night. She said, "Jeff, it's pretty clear you're not doing very well. Do you ever drink water or juice or anything else?" Jeff replied "Not really." Now here's the story that he relayed. Two years prior, he and his wife realized that they had gained a little too much weight. They began a diet and included diet sodas to replace their use of sugar. They also added packets of the sweetener aspartame to other foods and beverages.

Saccharin (Sweet'n Low) has been around for about a hundred years, and at one time it had a reputation as a cancer-causing agent because of studies in which rats got bladder tumors when they were fed incredibly high amounts (equivalent to what a human would get drinking eight hundred cans of diet soda a day). Recently, saccharine was declared safe, and probably is in reasonable amounts. Next to sucralose and stevia, it's probably the best choice.
Most of them use aspartame, which should definitely be eliminated (see next question); in addition, diet soda can stall weight loss in some people (up to 40 to 50 percent, by some estimations), possibly due to the citric acid they contain. Many people do drink soda addictively (I had one client who routinely consumed sixteen cans a day), and the amounts consumed by people like this have never been tested for safety in long-term studies.

Because they do not recognize the sweet taste of substances, they often consume sugary products that they do not appreciate as sweet.

Over the years I have dealt with hundreds of women who have had some serious hormonal problems and/or headaches that have cleared up after a few months off sweeteners. diet soda and sweeteners are not an option in my opinion. Use raw honey or fructose in a powdered form. Other so-called natural sweeteners such as stevia and xylitol are known to cause diarrhea. Xylitol has a SORBITOL (E 420) ASPARTAME (NO E NUMBER GIVEN AS YET) bit of a history as some animals in the research inexplicably died. I don't believe either sweetener has been in use long enough to be found safe in humans.

No matter how tempting it is to tell a parent he or she should not be giving his or her child diet soda (or any soda for that matter) in the child's bottle (or any other container) don't tell them. I vividly remember sitting behind two mothers at my daughter's school just after I had realized that cow's milk was causing their tonsillitis and ear infections. They were bemoaning the fact that their children were continually on antibiotics and it was costing them so much money and time.

At the time of the FDA's announcement, five million pounds of saccharin were being consumed per year, 74 percent of it in diet soda, 14 percent in dietetic food, and 12 percent as a tabletop replacement for sugar. There was an immediate outcry, led vociferously by the Calorie Control Council. The FDA, urged by Congress, then delayed the ban. The moratorium on prohibiting the use of saccharin has been extended indefinitely. - Ruth Winter, M.S.
This sounds ridiculous (how many people drink 16 cans of diet soda each day?), but when you take a vitamin pill with aspartame, eat your breakfast cereal and hot cocoa with aspartame, have some aspartame-sweetened gelatin and a soft drink for lunch, chocolate pudding with aspartame for dinner dessert, and maybe another soda, it adds up very quickly. Pari: of the problem with the current labeling for aspartame is that the actual amounts used do not have to be listed, so you really have no idea how much aspartame you are consuming.

A CASE OF DIARRHEA AND DIET POP If someone suggests clear liquids for your child's diarrhea, the last thing he or she means is diet soda pop. "Not even regular soft drinks are acceptable," says Paul Lewis, M.D., a pediatrician at the University of Washington. "But diet drinks are worst of all." Dr. Lewis recently treated a five-year-old boy who was hospitalized with diarrhea. Blood tests showed him to be literally "starving." Perplexed, Dr. Lewis on a hunch asked the parents if they had given the boy diet soda, thinking it was a good "clear liquid.

For two weeks they replaced their diet soda with regular high-calorie sugar sweetened soda. Amazingly, no one gained any weight. Even more shocking was 80 percent of the people actually lost weight. One person lost seven pounds! This was stunning to me. Diet foods fall into the same category. Do not eat anything that is being presented as a diet food. They are loaded with ingredients that will actually make you fatter and make you physically addicted. 15. No fast food or chain restaurants.
I would never in a million years drink a diet soda because the chemical sweeteners, in my opinion, are some of the most toxic things you could put in your body. On occasion I will drink a Coca Cola from a bottle, not a can. The problem, however, with virtually all carbonated beverages is they block calcium absorption. Calcium is one of the most important building blocks of nutrition. What about alcohol? If you come to my house I have an array of liqueurs, spirits, wine and beer primarily for guests. What's the ideal scene? Drink water and nothing else.

Iced tea with Sweet'N Low or diet soda. I go home full. That's my treat, twice a week. And I don't go to any fast-food places at all any more, because there's really nothing I can have. My only big treat, once a month—I go to McDonald's and get a low-fat fruit yogurt. It has carbs in it, but I have it anyway. See, they don't tell you about the carbs. So it says "low-fat" but there might be sugar in it. The fruit might have been frozen in sugar. They make you believe you're having something healthy, but you're not. You have to read every single ingredient before you buy anything.
Replace your typical cheeseburger, fries, and Coke meal with a topless burger (removing the top half of the bun), a salad (such as the McDonald's McSalad Shaker with no cheese and Caesar dressing), and a diet soda, and the carbs drop dramatically A Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich The least harmful part of this classic is the peanut butter, of course. It's a good source of monounsaturated fat. It contains resveratrol, too, the same phytochemical that makes red wine beneficial as a protection against heart disease and cancer.
I buy diet soda. I have one cup of coffee a day, in the morning. Now I even try to eat breakfast. I'll have Egg Beaters and maybe two slices of bacon. Or I'll take lunchmeat and just roll it up with some low-fat cheese and a sliced tomato. I'm still not a big breakfast person. But I find that it gets the fire burning. No baked goods. At work, if they bring in tuna on French bread, I might eat a little of the bread with the tuna. But the times I do that are very few and far between. I can't allow myself. Even now, I'm in a little bit of a stall.

By the next day, she says, "Their behavior changes drastically."5 The junk food mice change from social, highly active animals to lazy, antisocial ones. They groom themselves more, appear nervous, hide their food, and can no longer perform some of the "tricks" they did beforehand. It takes about two to three weeks on the whole food diet for them to recover from the junk food. Once, the class tried to repeat the experiment on the same mice months later, but the animals refused to eat the junk food.

Avoid this by using artificial sweeteners only when combined with food. Salt Don't worry about salt unless you have been told to do so by your doctor. To wash it down she drank several cans of diet soda. That took her to about 7 P.M. Then she went to the supermarket to purchase supplies to get her through the evening. While shopping she scarfed down almost a whole bag of potato chips and a large candy bar. She still managed to buy a box each of brownies and muffins, along with a frozen cheesecake. By the time she got home the chips were gone and she finally felt full. She left the rest of the food in the car with the rationale that if it was outside the house she wouldn't go near it.
